Call for Pilot studies proposals: $25,000/year for up to 2 years

Limited Competition: open only for the University of California – San Diego, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University at Buffalo, Wake Forest University, the University of Colorado Denver, and the Oregon Health & Science University.

The NIDA Center for Genetic Studies of Drug Abuse in Outbred Rats (P50DA037844) focuses on quantitative genetic studies of a range of psychologically complex drug abuse-related phenotypes. The purpose of the pilot projects is to broaden the impact of this center and to promote the use of HS rats.

Area of support: This call invites applications from institutions that already participate in the Center (University of California – San Diego, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University at Buffalo, Wake Forest University, the University of Colorado Denver, and the Oregon Health & Science University). We are soliciting pilot projects that would support the goals of the Center and collect preliminary data to be used for grant applications to NIDA.
Eligibility: Assistant, Associate, and full Professors (or equivalent); junior faculty are encouraged to apply.
Deadline for letter of intent: March 1, 2023. (Letters of intent are not required but they allow us to give you feedback that may increase the chances that we will fund your application).
Deadline for application: April 1, 2023.
Decisions announced: May 1, 2023.
Funding period: Start date 5/1/2023, end date 4/30/2024 or 4/30/2025.

To apply: Please submit a short letter of intent stating the connection between the proposed study and NIDA Center for Genetic Studies of Drug Abuse in Outbred Rats, and an estimate of the total funds requested (up to $25,000 per year, for 1 or 2 years). Proposals that are judged to be meritorious and related to the goals of the Center will receive an invitation to submit a full application. Full application is due on April 1, 2022. It should include:

  1. Abstract of the proposal, including a statement of relevance to the NIDA center for genetic studies of drug abuse in outbred rats (1/2 page)
  2. Specific Aims (up to 1 page)
  3. Research strategy (up to 2 pages)
  4. Biosketches (current NIH format)
  5. Brief budget justification.
  6. Bibliography

Proposals will be scored based on scientific merit, scientific diversity, institutional diversity, and other criteria relevant to the goals of the Pilot Projects Core.
